Cardiff commuters hear huge noise from Principality Stadium as epic moment unfolds

There was an unusual sight on top of the Principality Stadium

Iconic Haka Performed on Principality Stadium Roof

Anyone passing near the Principality Stadium early on Thursday morning of last week may have noticed something unusual - and perhaps oddly familiar.

The sound of the haka has boomed around rugby stadiums around the world for over a century and will be on show once again in Cardiff this autumn.

New Zealand roll into the Welsh capital on November 14 for the Autumn Nations Championship clash, and the Welsh Rugby Union has kicked off the build-up to the big game in fine style.

But, weeks before the match takes place, the sound of the haka filled teh city skyline as even performers with connections to both Wales and New Zealand took to the roof of the Principality Stadium to perform iconic 'Ka Mate'.

The noise from the unmistakable ritual, which is performed in New Zealand to mark various occasions, could be heard rippling through Cardiff, much to the fascination of passers-by.

The powerful visual display aims to pay tribute to one of rugby's greatest rivalries and friendships and to celebrate the deep rugby connections between the two nations.

'We're on hallowed ground'

It's been supported by David Jones, chief executive of Haka International, which serves to ensure the haka is delivered with authenticity, respect and integrity.

"We're here on hallowed ground", he said. "I have ancestry of both, Welsh and New Zealand. Thinking about 1905, when the haka was done here and the response was the Welsh National Anthem, you've got two great cultures meeting.

"For me, the cultural element is the part that connects into the people of the land; and, being over this side of the world and now living in the UK, rugby is a vehicle by which we can connect back to home.

"Today we performed Ka Mate, which was the haka performed in 1905. It was history in the making, and how humbling and what an honour it is to perform that haka again, in this space."

Tickets for Wales v New Zealand are still available for fans to buy.
