Rob Elliot on Carlisle United's comeback win at Solihull Moors

The Blues came from behind to win 2-1 at the ARMCO Arena as Morgan Feeney and sub David Ajiboye scored to turn things around.

A triple change on the hour mark helped United turn the tables, having produced a bleak first-half display.

And after a third straight away win that took them up to 11th in the National League, head coach Elliot told the News & Star: “It’s a squad effort. It’s not about one player or just the starting XI.

“We decided to change it, to get a bit more energy and pace on there.

“The lads who came on gave us that bit more impetus. Once we pinned them back, we were able to step on.

“And the likes of David did superbly for us.”

Carlisle fell behind to Ben Wodskou’s goal at the end of a highly unimpressive first half in the West Midlands.

But United found a way back through Feeney’s volley, before Ajiboye struck his fourth of the season.

It is the first time since February-March 2022 that Carlisle have won three on the spin on their travels, while they are now unbeaten in five games, having won four of them.

Elliot conceded that the first half was not good enough but felt the windy and rainy weather also played its part.

“Where we’ve been good in the last couple of games is stretching the pitch when we needed to, and then playing through the lines when we can. And it was really difficult with those conditions,” he said.

“I’ve played in those conditions before, and it’s really hard. You could see centre-halves not heading the ball – Alex Whitmore for them is one of the best centre-halves in terms of his heading, and he was struggling. It’s so hard to judge the flight of the ball.

“But I felt we could have done things better. I think Micah [Obiero] and Regan [Linney] didn't get the timings right in terms of [their runs in attack].

“We couldn't really find our midfielders on the ball. They just blocked the lines and blocked the channels. When we played around the press, we were good.

“But we probably moved the ball too slowly for the conditions – and then the conditions get on top of you.

“It’s part of football. You've got to learn to win in any way, any capacity, whether it's in front of 10,000 at Brunton Park or in horrible conditions away to Solihull.

“The important thing is that we fixed it. The game is 90 minutes and that's why you have a squad – and the squad came through.

“I felt Miggy [Azeez], David [Ajiboye] and Galvs [Ryan Galvin] really smoothed it out and Wearnie [Stephen Wearne] was excellent in between the lines, causing carnage.

“We looked forward more aggressively and played forward more, which pushed them back. And then we were able to break them down and keep putting crosses in the box.

“It was attritional at the end and we had to make sure we did the right things. We probably had a few bodies we wanted to take off if we could have done, but we had to get through it and we defended the box really well.”

Ajiboye provided the decisive moment in front of 585 travelling fans, and Elliot added: “We talked to the boys about getting in the box, timing their runs and assessing it.

“We've got the most crosses, the most successful crosses and everything [in the league]. We should have scored more, but it can also be about giving the players [time] to get a bit used to it and used to timing their runs that way.

“We're seeing the rewards now. We just need to make sure we keep seeing them.”

Elliot feels Carlisle’s current form and their good recent results on the road can help further reinforce the team’s belief.

“When you look at stats and the league and stuff, you can forget what it takes to win a game of football at any level,” Elliot said.

“So for the lads to do that [win three in a row away from home], with [there having been] some good teams over the last four-and-a-half years, that’s a great little stat for them, when you think of the criticism they got before AFC Fylde.

“To go and win that, win at Aldershot and now here shows a good mentality and a growing mentality. And I think that's the thing that we've got to keep working on. We've got to keep getting better at it.

“It’s where we’ve got to grow as a club, not just as a team, in terms of that resilience to any criticism.

“It’s a one-city club. The football means everything and people hold onto every word. So we've got to be a little bit more resilient to that and understand that fans have their frustrations and that's OK.

“But we can't come away from doing what we do and believing in that process.”
