Michael Carrick makes Manchester United future admission as sack looms after Chelsea defeat
Michael Carrick to remain in charge at Manchester United

Michael Carrick believes that he will still be Manchester United manager despite losing 2-0 to Chelsea.

The Red Devils were beaten comprehensively by the Blues on Sunday to extend their winless run to nine games in all competitions, with their last victory coming at the back end of August against Ipswich Town.

The stretch of poor results has plunged Carrick’s future as United head coach into serious question, with the former midfielder expected to be relieved of his duties following heavy 4-1 and 3-0 losses to both Como and Bournemouth respectively last week.

He was spared the sack earlier this week, and was given a chance to reprieve himself and salvage the season with the trip to Stamford Bridge, but the 10-man visitors were unable to claim even a single point, with Lisandro Martinez sent off and Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer adding the goals for Chelsea.

Carrick was applauded off by the travelling supporters, who sung the under-fire manager’s name in west London before directing their ire at the club’s hierarchy and the underperforming players, who trudged off following their head coach.

In his post-match interview to TNT Sports, Carrick insisted that he would remain in charge for United’s Champions League encounter with Roma on Tuesday.

When asked if he thought he would still be in-post, he simply replied: “Yeah.”

The ex-England international refused to blame Martinez for the defeat, despite the Argentine’s questionable decision to block off Wesley Fofana and concede a penalty from a corner kick, which ultimately was scored by Palmer.

It earned the centre-back a second yelow card, and will see him suspended for the home game against Aston Villa next weekend.

With another one-word answer, Carrick responded: “No” when asked if he had been “let down” by Martinez, who had earned himself some headlines after publicly criticising the club’s director of football Jason Wilcox after the Champions League defeat.

Addressing the angry fans, the head coach said: "There is a lot of emotion, we're a great football club, and we want to win football matches. The supporters come, make a lot of effort, pay a lot of money to watch us play. You can see from today the boys had the game in the right place and things have gone against us.

"Things have gone against us, and gone against us in a big way. Unravelled quickly. A lot of emotion right now.

"We have got to move forward and take the things that worked for us today. A lot of the good things, especially in the first half and use that moving forward.
