Three years on: How Daryl Powell transformed Wakefield Trinity from basement boys to Super League Champions

Today, Saturday 24 October, marks exactly three years since Wakefield Trinity made one of the most transformative managerial appointments in modern rugby league history by confirming Daryl Powell as their new head coach.

When Powell put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Belle Vue in October 2023, Trinity were at their lowest ebb.

Fresh off an agonising relegation from Super League after 25 years in the top flight, the club was facing an uncertain future on and off the field.

Fast forward 36 months, and the contrast could not be starker. Alongside ambitious owner Matt Ellis, Powell hasn’t just rebuilt Wakefield Trinity, he has completed one of the greatest turnarounds in English rugby league history, capping it off by lifting the Super League Grand Final trophy.

Taking over a club in transition is never easy, but Powell arrived with a proven track record of constructing sustained success, most notably during his iconic stint at Castleford Tigers. What followed over the next three seasons was nothing short of extraordinary.

From Championship treble to Super League Grand Final glory

After sweeping the second tier in 2024 by claiming the Championship League Leaders’ Shield, lifting the 1895 Cup at Wembley, and winning the Grand Final to secure their Super League return, Powell’s men weren’t content with making up the numbers – they came back to conquer.

Under Powell’s meticulous leadership, Trinity have built a culture of relentless effort and high-octane attacking rugby league. Powerful forward recruits like Ky Rodwell, Mike McMeeken, and explosive powerhouse Caius Fa’atili thrive in Powell’s system, laying the platform for Belle Vue to become a genuine fortress once again.

Crucially, Powell provided the sporting vision that complemented Ellis’ multi-million-pound off-field redevelopment, ensuring Trinity achieved top-tier IMG grading while simultaneously delivering silverware on the pitch.

Capping off this remarkable three-year journey with a Grand Final triumph, Wakefield Trinity have completed a legendary ascent. No longer viewed as relegation candidates or top-flight survivors, Trinity stand at the pinnacle of Super League, solidifying Powell’s appointment as one of the single greatest decisions in the club’s history.
