Jordan Henderson can finally win the fans over with display against Tottenham

Jordan Henderson has spent much of his career winning trophies and earning respect, but winning over every set of supporters he plays in front of is an entirely different challenge.

The former Liverpool captain has experienced the highest highs of English football, yet his latest chapter in West London has left him with something to prove. Before he pulled on a blue shirt, Chelsea fans could easily have been among his biggest critics, questioning his tendency to prefer sideways passes and whether he could still exert a meaningful influence without talking and directing.

However, against Tottenham, Henderson has the perfect opportunity to silence those doubts and begin changing the narrative at his grand old age.

There was a time when Henderson was regarded as one of the Premier League's most reliable midfielders, lifting the Champions League and Premier League titles during his spell at Anfield. A true leader in the purest Premier League form.

Criticism from qualified and unqualified pundits alike (myself firmly belonging in the latter category) is never in short supply. However, the praise he receives from his fellow professionals must count for something.

Now, the Tottenham fixture presents a chance to remind everyone why he was once trusted to lead one of England's biggest clubs. In a London derby where intensity, discipline and experience can prove decisive, Henderson must show that he still has the legs and intelligence to compete with Chelsea's midfield.

Jordan Henderson has a point to prove against Tottenham

Henderson does not need to repeat a spectacular goal or an outrageous assist to win people over. Instead, it is the less glamorous aspects of his game that could make the biggest difference: winning second balls, organising those around him, pressing at the right moments and keeping possession moving when the pressure builds.

Fans will not expect a repeat of the Bournemouth game (will be nice) but a solid display alongside Caicedo to ensure a clean sheet and protect Chelsea’s goal with newbie Mike Penders in goal will be enough.

Chelsea will need their midfield to be switched on throughout the contest, particularly against a Tottenham side capable of making life uncomfortable when they find their rhythm. Henderson's experience could prove invaluable, but reputation alone will not be enough.

A man you can admire when he wears your colours, yet a player who rarely gets the respect he deserves from the wider football community. Perhaps Chelsea will finally give him the credit he has earned.
