Sheffield Wednesday host Cambridge United in the first game since the sacking of Henrik Pedersen. Matt Hamshaw will take charge of the game, but what should the Owls expect?
Two defeats in a row left David Storch and co. with no choice but to sack Pedersen. While the players wait to find out who will be their new boss, they need to regroup ahead of a tough game against Cambridge.
The visitors are one of the surprise packages this season. They were promoted from League Two last campaign and are currently 6th in League One after a promising start.
We’ve got the lowdown on what Sheffield Wednesday should expect from the game against the U’s.
Cambridge come to Hillsborough on the back of their second defeat of the season. The U’s lost 3-2 against Plymouth Argyle but had been unbeaten since the end of August.
Last five results:
Sofascore had Cambridge lined up in a 4-2-3-1 against Plymouth. Their starting 11 consisted of:
Eastwood; Bennett, Watts, Heffernan, Bradshaw; Mpanzu (Stead, 80), Hoddle (Moxon, 62); Knight, Bangura-Williams (Lavery, 61), Kaikai; Appere.
Gabriel Breeze, Sam Curtis, Patrick Bauer, and Issac Heath were all unused substitutes in the game.
Manager Neil Harris has confirmed that his side could once again be without striker Gassan Ahadme. Speaking to the Cambridge Independent, he said:
“It’s a groin/hip injury. We’re confident it’s not going to be long, but we’ll have to be respectful of it as well.
“It’s unfortunate it’s come at a time when we’ve got a lot of games quickly. Whether he’s back for Tuesday, we’ll have to see, but we don’t expect him to be out long.”
Despite their defeat over the weekend, the U’s will likely come to Hillsborough with the confidence that they can get something from the game.
Here are some of the players Wednesday will need to watch out for.
Defender Kell Watts has the highest average Sofascore rating in the squad. The 26-year-old has a 7.12 average rating and has played every game for the U’s.
His standout game came against Blackpool. The defender picked up a 9.7 rating as he recorded 14 defensive contributions for Cambridge as they won 1-0.
Forward Ben Knight is the U’s top scorer with four league goals this campaign. Knight has played 12 games this season, starting 11 times.
The 24-year-old has one more goal than Shayne Lavery and Ahadme. Overall though, the goals have definitely been shared amongst the U’s team, with nine players scoring in the league.
Knight is one of three players to have two assists in the league for Cambridge this season. He’s tied with Zak Bradshaw and Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu as the side’s top assister.
Defender Bradshaw has created the most big chances for Cambridge; the left back is someone Wednesday will need to contain.
