Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson received a one-game suspension from the NFL on Monday for unsportsmanlike conduct toward an opponent. The incident happened just before halftime on Sunday when Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins failed to complete the pass to Tre Tucker with 19 seconds left. Gardner-Johnson was then captured spitting in Raiders tight end Brock Bowers’ direction. The Bills safety subsequently appealed the suspension decision to the NFL.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter on Thursday, the league upheld Gardner-Johnson’s one-game suspension following his appeal. So, Gardner-Johnson will have to serve the punishment. Buffalo (5-1), which is on its bye week, will host the Baltimore Ravens (4-2) on Nov. 1.

The news ignited different reactions from NFL fans.

“How is he still in the NFL?” one fan wrote.

“Make it a 10 game suspension please,” one fan said.

“I’ve said it a million times. I don’t want that behavior on my team. Dude disrespected someone who made an amazing catch in week 4 and now this. Gotta show respect, CJ,” one fan shared.

“I think if you appeal a suspension and lose, an additional game suspension should be added,” one fan remarked.

“appeal denied, he’s paying full price,” one fan added.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Apologizes For Unsportsmanlike Conduct Against Raiders

After the heated exchange between C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Raiders tight end Brock Bowers that led to the spitting incident, the Bills safety acknowledged that his emotions got the better of him on the field.

“There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability,” Gardner-Johnson said in an Instagram post. “No matter how emotional or intense the competition gets, I have to hold myself to a higher standard. To my opponent, I sincerely apologize. We compete hard between those lines, but respect should always remain at the forefront.”

Gardner-Johnson also said he needed to hold himself to a higher standard.

“I love this game, I respect this game, and I will always protect the integrity of this game,” he said. “My actions will speak louder than my words moving forward.”

According to the NFL ruling, Gardner-Johnson will sit out the next game against the Baltimore Ravens without pay.
