Michael Carrick is reportedly set to be given time to turn Manchester United's fortunes around and will be in charge against Chelsea on Saturday.

According to multiple reports, Carrick will not be sacked after INEOS chiefs held crisis talks about his future following a 3-0 humiliation against Bournemouth on Sunday and a 4-1 drubbing against Como in the Champions League just days earlier.

The 45-year-old was only given the permanent job in the summer after a brilliant end to the season as interim manager saw United finish 3rd and return to the Champions League.

However, this season has started in nightmare fashion with United currently in 16th place in the league with just one win from eight league games.

United have just three points from a possible nine in the Champions League, with September's victory over Azerbaijan champions Sabah the only win. And they were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton.

Carrick looked set to be axed but it's reported the legendary midfielder will be given time to turn the problems on the pitch at Old Trafford around, and he is expected to be in the dugout when the Red Devils travel to Stamford Bridge for the early kick-off on Saturday.

After no training on Monday, Carrick took training as normal at Carrington on Tuesday. The former midfielder did attend the training ground on Monday to watch United U21s play Hull City in a behind-closed-doors game.

Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada were also both at Carrington on Monday for talks over Carrick's future, but they have, for the time being, given Carrick time to turn things around.

Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are considered the frontrunners for the job should Carrick fail to correct an eight game winless run.

Speaking after the Bournemouth defeat, Carrick said: I'm feeling mixed emotions. I feel for the players as they are going through a tough spell.

"Some of it we can help, for some the situation unravels. The boys are feeling it. I have mixed emotions to have that connection with the supporters in the moment we're in. I need time to digest that.

"I appreciate their support but the situation is where it's at. We haven't been good enough."
