Children, young people with special needs and disabilities, and siblings supported by a Thatcham-based charity enjoyed a memorable day as mascots at Thatcham Town FC – and they proved to be lucky with a 4-2 win for The Kingfishers.
The young people, supported by Swings & Smiles, were warmly welcomed by players, club officials and supporters, and treated to a special behind-the-scenes matchday experience.
The families were warmly welcomed by players, volunteers and supporters, enjoying tunnel photos, meeting the teams and walking the players on to the pitch in their newly gifted Kingfishers shirts, half-time activities and post-match high fives.
The mascot experience is part of a growing partnership between the charity and Thatcham Town FC, helping to raise awareness of the charity while enabling local families to enjoy football in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Children's development lead at Swings & Smiles Becky Smith said: “Days like these are about so much more than football.
“They’re about belonging, inclusion and ensuring every child and family feels welcomed and valued within their community.”
They were joined on the day by long time supporters of the charity, deputy mayor of Thatcham Petra Pemberton together with mayor of Thatcham Mark Lillycrop and mayoress of Thatcham Jenny Lillycrop who joined in the celebrations.
They heartily thanked Nigel Manley and everyone at Thatcham Town FC for helping make the day such a success.
Swings & Smiles’ CEO Rhonda Nicklin said they hope to continue the partnership with the club:
“We’re proud of this partnership, which helps raise awareness and support for Swings & Smiles while giving children, siblings and families the chance to enjoy football in their hometown, surrounded by people who welcome and celebrate them.”
