Son of Leeds Rhinos great lands Championship deal

Keighley Cougars have bolstered their forward pack ahead of the new campaign with the signing of promising prop Max Fleary, son of former Leeds Rhinos, Great Britain, and Keighley legend Darren Fleary.

The young front-rower has put pen to paper on a contract at Cougar Park, stepping up to the Championship to follow in the footsteps of his father, who made nearly 100 appearances for Keighley before moving to Headingley in 1997.

Darren Fleary went on to enjoy a memorable career at the highest level, winning the Challenge Cup with Leeds in 1999 and representing Great Britain and England, including at the 2000 World Cup.

Rugby Operations lead Richard Dibbin expressed his delight at securing the youngster’s signature, highlighting the excitement surrounding his arrival.

“It’s been a pleasure getting Max on board, and I’m delighted he’s chosen to join us,” Dibbin said. “The connection through his dad is a lovely part of the story for our supporters, but this is Max’s opportunity to make his own name at Keighley.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group and supporting him as he takes this next step.”

Matt Bramald hands Max Fleary pre-season chance to impress

Cougars Head Coach Matt Bramald echoed Dibbin’s sentiments, explaining that pre-season will provide the young prop with an ideal platform to stake a claim for a regular spot in the side.

“I’m really pleased to have Max joining us,” Bramald stated. “He’s a young player with potential, and I’m looking forward to working with him and helping him develop.

“There will be opportunities here for players who work hard and earn their place, and pre-season gives Max the chance to show us what he can bring to the team.”

Fleary’s arrival provides added depth, size, and youthful energy to Keighley’s forward pack as they prepare for a competitive Championship season.
