Matching the match-winning qualities of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh is no easy task, even for the most talented Indian cricketers. Both legends played several memorable innings under pressure, rescuing India from difficult situations and forming partnerships that became a part of the country’s cricketing history. While Dhoni was renowned for his composure and finishing abilities, Yuvraj brought fearless stroke play and the ability to change a game’s momentum within a few overs.
But who in the current Indian team has the potential to follow in their footsteps? Former India batter Suresh Raina believes a young middle-order star possesses similar qualities, and his performances have already offered glimpses of his immense potential.
Raina has identified Tilak Varma as a batter who reminds him of the legendary Indian duo, praising the youngster’s temperament, adaptability and ability to deliver when the team needs him most.
Speaking to ANI, the former India international reflected on his experiences batting alongside Dhoni and Yuvraj in the middle and lower-middle order. He explained that the trio brought a particular level of passion and determination to their roles, qualities he now sees in Tilak.
“No, India are doing really well at the moment. Take Tilak Varma, for instance. When Yuvi Pa (Yuvraj Singh), Dhoni bhai (MS Dhoni) and I used to bat at No. 5, 6, 7 and 8, we had a certain passion, and I feel Tilak has that same quality. He is a player with a different mindset and has done exceptionally well. He is contributing with the ball too,” Raina told ANI.
Raina’s assessment comes after Tilak produced a crucial unbeaten half-century in India’s second T20I against New Zealand. The left-handed batter scored 51 runs off just 26 deliveries, playing a decisive role in helping India complete a thrilling four-wicket victory in Christchurch.
His contribution proved particularly valuable as India navigated a challenging chase. Tilak’s ability to maintain his composure while accelerating the scoring rate demonstrated why he is increasingly regarded as an important part of India’s batting plans. The victory also gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series, strengthening the team’s position ahead of the third encounter in Wellington.
Tilak’s growing reputation is built on more than his ability to score runs quickly. His composure under pressure, willingness to adapt to different match situations and versatility make him an exciting prospect for Indian cricket. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to shift gears according to the team’s requirements. Rather than relying exclusively on aggressive stroke play, he can build an innings when wickets fall before accelerating when the situation demands it. This flexibility is particularly important for a middle-order batter, who often has to handle vastly different circumstances from one match to another.
These qualities naturally invite comparisons with Dhoni and Yuvraj, although Tilak will need to establish his own legacy over time. Dhoni’s remarkable finishing skills and leadership, combined with Yuvraj’s explosive batting and ability to dominate major tournaments, set exceptionally high standards.
Tilak has also shown that he can contribute with the ball, adding another dimension to his value as a team player. His ability to perform multiple roles could prove useful as India continue to develop their squad for future international competitions. Raina’s endorsement carries additional significance because he experienced first-hand what made Dhoni and Yuvraj such influential players. Having shared the dressing room with both legends, he understands the importance of temperament, confidence and responsibility in pressure situations.
