Tom Ince sets out Tranmere Rovers promotion ambition

The 34-year-old midfielder insists he has no intentions of winding down his career and believes Rovers should be looking up the table after a much stronger start than previous seasons.

“I haven't come here to sit out the rest of my days,” Ince said. “I still want to progress, I still want to get this club out of this division.

“That's the ambition I have, that's the love I have for the game.”

It was a bullish message from the 34-year-old ahead of Saturday's meeting with Cheltenham, with Ince also arguing Rovers have the quality and mentality to challenge higher up the division.

He said: “You always find that in this league, and in pretty much every league in England, that if you can put five or six wins together, you always find yourself top four, top five, so we have to have that aim, we have to have that ambition.

“We don't sit in the changing room and think, as long as we stay clear of the bottom. Our aim is looking upwards.

“We have the mentality, we have the quality to do that.”

That ambition comes with an acknowledgement that Tranmere have left points on the table.

Ince believes performances have often deserved more, identifying both a lack of clinical finishing and an inability to kill off matches as areas Rovers must improve.

“We've dropped far too many points late on in games and we've had a lot of chances over the course of games that we've played so far and not been able to be clinical enough,” he said.

“We've had some tough teams come to Prenton Park and I felt we've dominated those games but not been able to see the game out at the right time.

“We've let too many teams back in, whether that be being 1-0 up and then having a little bit of a negative mindset to try and hold on to that lead instead of continuing our performances throughout the game.”

Ince has little concern about Rovers' attacking shortcomings becoming a long-term problem, arguing that the fact they continue to create opportunities is encouraging.

“It's not a case of if we weren't creating chances and we weren't getting in the final third, then I think that's a lot bigger problem to have,” he said.

“We can be a very good attacking threat. We've got a lot of ability up at the top end of the pitch."

Following a few difficult years both for Rovers and for Ince in his own career, the forward says his job now is to "steer" them to success.

“The last few years it's been frustrating for me in my football and career, so it's just nice to come and play football and enjoy my football,” he said.

“It's nice, but most importantly my job is to come and win football matches for this football club and to try and steer away from where it's been for the last few seasons.

“It's a football club and a stadium and a fan base that deserves more.”
