Tenby complete magnificent 7-0 whitewash against Ashburnham
Tenby Golf Club captain Brian Jones receives more silverware

TENBY Golf Club continued its outstanding season with a convincing victory over Ashburnham Golf Club in their annual matchplay fixture, adding to recent successes in the Wales Golf Ping Championship and the Hamilton Cup.

The match had been threatened by forecasts of heavy rain, but the Pembrokeshire weather once again proved unpredictable. Instead of the expected downpour, players enjoyed ideal conditions that paved the way for some excellent scoring.

The tone was set in the opening match as Alison Daniel and Martin Spurin produced a superb display. A flurry of birdies left their opponents struggling to keep pace, with the Tenby pair racing to an emphatic 8&6 victory.

Their performance was a major talking point during the post-match dinner, with Ashburnham captain Olwen Davies praising the pair while jokingly questioning the handiwork of Tenby’s Competition and Handicap Committee.

Heather Morgan and Chris Hughes were next into action and faced the added challenge of conceding eight shots to their opponents. In a closely fought contest, a brilliant greenside bunker shot from Hughes on the 16th hole proved decisive as the Tenby duo edged over the line.

The reliable pairing of the Larges followed and once again demonstrated why they are such formidable opponents. After moving one up on the second hole, they never looked back, steadily extending their advantage on the way to a comfortable 3&2 win.

Diana Dredge and Brian Jones maintained Tenby’s momentum with another 3&2 success. Jones later joked that during the 16 holes played, they had only needed to use one of his drives, underlining Dredge’s impressive contribution.

Angela Gottwaltz and Roger Schooling wrapped up their match early on the back nine to secure a fifth point for the hosts, raising hopes of a clean sweep.

Gill John and Ian Williams looked in trouble after finding themselves two down through the opening two holes, but produced an excellent response. Displaying plenty of resilience and quality golf, they turned the match around to record a convincing 5&3 victory.

The final pairing of Trevayne Keohane and club vice-captain Wyndham Collins completed the whitewash, although their path to victory was far from straightforward. Three down after four holes, they dug deep and showcased the fighting spirit that has characterised Tenby’s season, eventually storming back to claim a 4&3 win.

The result secured a remarkable 7-0 victory for Tenby, but the occasion once again highlighted the strong friendship and sporting rivalry between the two clubs.

Tenby also recently hosted the latest staging of the Centenary Challenge, welcoming teams from Glynhir, Haverfordwest and Carmarthen for the prestigious event.

Players arrived for a 10am shotgun start to find a blanket of sea mist covering the course, but conditions soon improved and the remainder of the day was played in unusually warm weather.

The better-ball matchplay competition proved closely contested, with hosts Tenby eventually finishing just one point behind defending champions Haverfordwest. The outcome may have been different had Mick Seal not been forced to play alone following a late withdrawal caused by a family emergency.

Off the course, the post-match curry was warmly received, while visiting players were quick to praise the work of the greenkeeping team, particularly the excellent condition of the greens. Much credit also went to organiser Derek Cole, who ensured the day ran smoothly from start to finish.
