Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reiterated his desire to become head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, saying the team’s history and pool of talented players make the job appealing.
The Trinidad and Tobago legend had previously expressed interest in taking charge of the four-time African champions and has now restated his ambition in an interview with .
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available. You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider. The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it,” Yorke said.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he added.
Ghana are currently searching for a permanent head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, who left the position after the team’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost their opening two matches in Group C, suffering defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia to leave their qualification campaign under early pressure.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have since appointed an interim technical team to oversee the national side’s next assignments.
The team will be led by Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistant coaches. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.
Yorke, who enjoyed a successful playing career with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and other clubs, believes Ghana has the talent required to compete at the highest level but would need to establish a strong team culture and secure the players’ commitment to his methods.
Ghana are scheduled to face Somalia in their Matchday Three and Four fixtures next month, with the interim technical team expected to take charge of both matches.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a permanent head coach in November as they look to stabilise the team and improve their prospects of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
