Serhou Guirassy scored twice for Borussia Dortmund against Sabah on Tuesday to take his Champions League tally to 23 goals in 31 appearances.
The Guinea international, known as “Mengue” in his homeland, needed only 10 minutes to open the scoring in Azerbaijan before adding a second goal after the break. The result was another significant milestone for the 30-year-old forward, whose scoring rate now stands at about 0.74 goals per game.
Guirassy had gone into the match with 21 goals from 30 Champions League outings, a return of exactly 0.70 per appearance. His latest double has lifted him alongside some of the competition’s most prolific active forwards.
Erling Haaland remains above a goal per game, while Harry Kane has a ratio of about 0.79. Guirassy now sits just behind those two and, on the current calculation, ahead of Kylian Mbappe.
His 23 goals also strengthen his position in the top five African goalscorers in UEFA Champions League history.
Guirassy’s European rise has been particularly striking given that his first Champions League campaign consisted of only four appearances for Rennes in 2020-2021. He scored twice in that limited involvement, but it was after joining Dortmund that his impact on the competition grew substantially.
During the 2024-2025 season, he scored 13 goals in 14 Champions League matches and finished joint top scorer in the competition alongside Raphinha. His average at the time was 0.93 goals per appearance.
His output fell to four goals during the 2025-2026 Champions League campaign, but he has quickly returned to a high level this season. He now has four goals in three matches, having scored two against Villarreal before the double against Sabah.
Guirassy has also made a positive start in the Bundesliga, registering two goals and two assists in six appearances. His European scoring efficiency, however, remains the clearest feature of his season so far.
Dortmund’s next Champions League fixtures will bring more prominent opposition. The German club will host Real Betis on 4 November, travel to Arsenal on 24 November and welcome Inter Milan on 9 December.
Aston Villa and AEK Athens will follow in January, offering Guirassy further opportunities to add to a European record that is becoming increasingly significant among African forwards.
