WINDHAM — Windham is on the doorstep of doing something no one has done in program history.
Hosting the No.4 Lyman Memorial Bulldogs girls' soccer team in the ECC Division II Semifinals, the freshman Sophia Murillo netted a hat trick to lead the No.1 Windham Whippets girls soccer team to a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
Offensively, it was a tale of two halves for Windham. After getting blanked in the first half, their offense exploded for four goals.
Lyman Memorials’ 1-0 lead quickly evaporated right out of the shoot in the second half. Murillo scored two goals in a five-minute span (39:41, 34:59) to give Windham a 2-1 lead.
The track meet continued. Freshman Layla Romero scored a goal with 32:27 remaining in the second half to make it a brand-new ballgame.
Windham had a golden opportunity and got back in front as Murillo drew a foul in the box. The defender clipped her as she crossed over to her right foot.
Junior Amiya Gile made Lymna Memorial pay the price for committing the foul, netting the goal with 17:07 left to put Windham up 3-2.
Windham delivered the knockout punch on a goal from Murillot to double the lead that sealed the win with 5:59 left in the semifinal matchup.
Windham didn’t let Lyman Memorial make it interesting. The mountain was to deep to climb to try ro claw back.
On Monday, Windham will try to claim their first-ever ECC Conference championship when they take on the Killingly Redmen on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Killingly defeated Montville 4-2 also on Saturday.
