Renée Slegers was back in front of the media for her pre-Liverpool press conference at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Thursday.
She was asked to share the latest team news, provide her thoughts on Sunday's opponents at Anfield and more.
Here's everything she had to say on the following subjects...
on playing teams who have played in low blocks against us this season:
When I say things externally straight after a game, I’m always very mindful that the exact same message needs to be addressed internally, which we did straight after the game with the players. This week as well, I think what’s been happening is that at the start of the season at Emirates Stadium - because we’re aware we haven’t won there this year in the WSL, which is not where we want to be - but the fact that one team gets success the way they do at Emirates has built belief into other teams, doing similar things and stopping and frustrating us. The opposition have had incredible output - Villa for example had one shot and one goal, but we were unable to break them down enough. There’s a piece of that belief building in opposition as well, and that’s a situation we have to look at ourselves and manage.
on Nikita Parris saying opponents have lost their fear at Emirates Stadium:
Other teams have to speak for themselves, but when they come to Emirates Stadium, they come to stop us, so that’s a sign of fear for me - but they also see opportunities to get one or two breaks and get a goal. That’s definitely something we need and want to change going forward, because we want to win at Emirates Stadium.
on the energy of the team this week:
To be clear, when I say energy, at the end of the day I’m responsible for the group, so it’s my responsibility and in addition, it’s the collective responsibility to create the energy. The energy is there of course, but it’s about how that expresses itself. There’s motivation and ambition to do better and turn this around among the staff and players, but I take full responsibility for the environment that we need to create. I can only say we’ve been very specific with the type of actions we need to generate energy for us, but the players have been really engaged, speaking up a lot, and we’ve had two or three sessions where the energy has been really good.
on how she’s dealing with our situation herself:
It’s been the same where I’ve spent my time. Of course, you have to make choices and be even more mindful of those choices you make. The way I present myself, what I choose to focus on, going in there with energy and a smile even though the natural reaction is not to, because it’s difficult for us right now. We do it because we believe it’s going to generate energy like we’ve spoken about, and we love to represent Arsenal. We need to spread positive energy around each other and with the group.
on if the next four games are a defining period for us:
I think everything is defining. It was at the start of the season and it's even more so now. So every moment we have is important for us and for where we want to end up, results, how we want to present ourselves, how we want to make the club and the supporters proud as well. So every moment is defining, we know that. The run of games that are ahead of us, they're challenging and exciting games. Liverpool, we remember that game from last year, it was the last game in an Arsenal shirt for a couple of players and it was a special game for us. It was a special moment for us. We have good memories of the football that we played there. Everything is new now, but we'll want to take that into the game on Sunday as well, and then the run of games, there's of course two big Champions League games coming up. We're in a good position in the league phase, now of course facing Barcelona and Lyon in the next two, which we look forward to, to the big challenges, and then London City we have. But Liverpool on Sunday.
on the pressure we feel away from home:
No. There is pressure, but the pressure is different when we play at home. We're proud to play at the Emirates and play in front of the fans. I think, like I just said, those games, the way they've played out and how our position has stopped us and disrupted us at Emirates, that's been the issue. But that's not the pressure or the fact that those results have been at the Emirates. We love playing at Emirates.
on if we’ve seen the squad perform to their full potential:
There's more in this team, of course. I think we've seen moments and gains. But there's more in this team, which is important for us to get out the absolute maximum of this team, and we believe that there's positive signs. For us, it's about the high-level moments that we can produce to do them consistently well and making sure that what's been and what's behind us is not affecting us too much going forward. It gives us the information we need to be able to know how to move forward. But we need to look forward, and I think we do make steps constantly. I think we've created a situation where, like I just mentioned, because of how it started and how the challenge then grew for us, where opposition then also has seen things and go in with a certain mindset into the games. But it's all about us, and I believe we are making steps and players are in form and coming together. And yeah, I'm convinced that on Sunday, you'll see a good Arsenal team.
on the latest team news:
No, no changes. So same as it stands now, there's a couple of days left, but the same availability.
The game is constantly evolving. I think we had about 20 goal kicks against Villa. I think 18 out of 20 we managed really well. And there's one warning sign, I think, about four minutes before the goal they score. And then there's one where it breaks down. So like I said, the game is evolving. We're looking to be aggressive in moments and stopping opposition in moments as well, respecting what they have. For example, Villa with Vangsgaard and Chasity Grant, they pose that threat. But like I said, there was 18 out of 20 that we managed well. And then that one moment broke us down, and we've reviewed it. We know what to do better, differently. We have our own reflections as a staff as well. How we set things up, of course, and we move from there. I believe what we need is there. We just have to make sure it comes out and expresses itself on the pitch, which is my job. I don't believe in luck. You create your own luck. I think, like I said, the one chance that they get is a very big open chance. It goes in through a deflection and it's a goal. But yes, you create it yourself. And we have to make sure that with the game we play and the way we play and what opposition tries to do against us, is that every single moment we have to close down. So we have to be disciplined in every single moment because opposition is looking for one or two moments. I think they had a really good second half of the season last year as well. The game that we played there at Anfield last year, the first half, they were really brave and aggressive in their press. I think that's something they do well. They're very structured with their in-possession, out-of-possession way they play. I think they've added some players to their squad as well. It looks really well balanced and I think they make it difficult for teams. And they will try to do that on Sunday as well, which we'll have to break down. It's taking the spaces when they're there for us. So when we can go faster and capitalise on moments when we win the ball as well? But then when we face the low block with a lot of bodies in the box, it's about, and I think this has been mentioned before here so it's nothing new, but it's about how we set up that final chance. What is the speed of play? How do we create that open situation for ourselves? How many touches do we take? Who's the player doing what for us on the pitch? And then with situations where there's a lot of bodies in the box, you're also going to have to react to, it won't always be perfect, but you're going to have to react to moments. And yes, those are the things we're looking at. So it's not one thing. We want to be, and that's been our strength as well, we want to be unpredictable and create in a variety of ways. But we've definitely looked at a couple of things that we think we need to nail in the final third against low blocks and do them consistently well.
