‘Ghana football owes him more recognition’ – Former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi pays glowing tribute to Kofi Manu ‘Blue Boy’ on his birthday

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi has paid a heartfelt tribute to veteran football administrator Kofi Manu, popularly known as “Wonderful” or “Blue Boy”, describing him as one of Ghana football’s most underrated personalities.

Marking Manu’s birthday, Nyantakyi praised his immense contribution to the administration of the game, insisting that his role in shaping Ghanaian football has not received the recognition it deserves.

According to the former GFA boss, Kofi Manu has been one of the country’s foremost experts in football regulations since the early 2000s, earning widespread respect for his deep understanding of the statutes and rules governing FIFA, CAF and the Ghana Football Association.

Nyantakyi also recalled Manu’s unwavering commitment to defending the interests of the GFA, revealing that he once risked his personal freedom after being cited for contempt of court while representing the association in a legal matter, ultimately avoiding a custodial sentence.

Although professionally trained as an electrical engineer, Manu developed an exceptional passion for football administration and regulatory matters. His expertise saw him regularly represent clubs, players and football officials before the GFA’s judicial bodies, despite not being a qualified lawyer.

He also led the renowned “Awolowo Chambers”—an informal football legal office that prepared cases and represented stakeholders before the GFA’s Player Status, Disciplinary and Appeals Committees. His contribution to football governance was further recognised through his appointment as Vice-Chairman of the GFA Player Status Committee.

Nyantakyi noted that Manu’s knowledge of football regulations, commitment to dispute resolution and dedication to protecting the rights of stakeholders have left a lasting impact on Ghana football, adding that younger generations should be educated about the important roles played by administrators like him.

Concluding his tribute, Nyantakyi wished the veteran football administrator a happy birthday and prayed for God’s continued blessings.

“On the occasion of his birthday, I celebrate Kofi Manu, aka Wonderful, aka Blue Boy, for his passion, knowledge, dedication and invaluable contribution to Ghana football. Happy Birthday, Wonderful! May God grant you good health, long life and many more years of happiness.”
