"For the Sake of Football!" — Bellerin Begs Referee to Allow Stunning Goal Against Barcelona

Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin has gone viral for one of the funniest conversations between a footballer and a referee this season. The former Barcelona defender tried to convince an official to allow a spectacular Real Betis goal against his old club, arguing that a strike of such extraordinary quality simply deserved to count.

The unusual exchange took place during Barcelona's controversial 5-2 victory over Real Betis on October 17, but it only became public after footage from referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea's body camera was released. While Barcelona players surrounded the official demanding a handball decision, Bellerin approached with a rather different argument: forget the controversy for a moment and appreciate the beauty of the goal.

A Wonder Goal That Lasted Only a Few Moments

The incident occurred in the 43rd minute, with Barcelona leading 2-1 at La Cartuja. Giovani Lo Celso produced an extraordinary piece of technique, connecting with a spinning left-footed volley from outside the penalty area and sending the ball into the top corner of Joan Garcia's goal.

It appeared to be one of the finest goals of the La Liga season. The Betis players celebrated wildly, the home supporters erupted, and Lo Celso had seemingly brought his team level shortly before half-time.

However, Barcelona's players immediately protested, insisting that Cucho Hernandez had handled the ball earlier in the attacking move. Pedri was particularly vocal, repeatedly telling the referee that the Colombian forward had used his arm to control possession before Betis eventually worked the ball towards Lo Celso.

The incident was especially controversial because the suspected handball had occurred well before the shot, with several passes and a Barcelona defensive touch taking place between the two moments.

Bellerin's Hilarious Argument: Let the Goal Stand for Football

The most entertaining part of the controversy emerged when La Liga released footage recorded by the referee's body camera. The recording captured conversations that would normally remain unheard by television audiences.

Pedri approached De Burgos Bengoetxea and insisted that the handball was obvious. The referee initially responded that he considered the player's arm movement natural and therefore not necessarily an offence.

Other Barcelona players joined the discussion as the official communicated with the VAR team. Bellerin, meanwhile, decided to make a completely different case for allowing his teammate's goal.

"Just for the sake of the goal he scored, it should be allowed to stand. For the sake of football," the Betis defender told the referee.

It was hardly an argument based on the Laws of the Game, but it perfectly captured what many spectators were thinking. Lo Celso had produced a moment of outstanding skill, and Bellerin believed it would be a shame to erase it because of an incident earlier in the move.

The fact that Bellerin was making the appeal against Barcelona, a club he represented earlier in his career, made the exchange even more entertaining.

VAR Was Not Impressed

Unfortunately for Bellerin, football's rulebook does not contain an exception for particularly beautiful goals.

After consulting the VAR officials and reviewing the footage on the pitchside monitor, De Burgos Bengoetxea concluded that Cucho Hernandez had committed a handball offence during the attacking sequence.

The referee also determined that Barcelona had not established controlled possession between the handball and Lo Celso's finish, meaning the earlier infringement remained relevant to the goal.

The strike was consequently disallowed, leaving Betis furious and their supporters disappointed. Manuel Pellegrini was booked for protesting, while Lo Celso later questioned whether a similar goal scored by Barcelona would have been ruled out.

Barcelona eventually won 5-2, extending their perfect start to the La Liga season, but the controversy surrounding the cancelled goal continued long after the final whistle.

Referee Camera Footage Sparks Another Controversy

Bellerin's remark was not the only part of the recording to attract attention.

At one stage, De Burgos Bengoetxea could be heard asking VAR official Carlos del Cerro Grande to check the handball, referring to the appeals being made by Barcelona players.

The exchange prompted criticism from commentators who questioned whether the referee had allowed players' protests to influence the review process.

However, subsequent explanations pointed out that VAR officials automatically check potentially reviewable incidents and that communication between the on-field referee and the video assistant is a normal part of officiating. The footage alone does not establish that the review was improperly initiated.

The incident nevertheless provided another example of how releasing conversations between referees and players can create new debates, even when the original purpose of the technology is to make decisions more transparent.

Sometimes Football Is About More Than the Rules

For Bellerin, the viral moment offered a rare glimpse of the human side of professional football. Players usually approach referees to argue about fouls, penalties or disciplinary decisions, but his appeal was essentially an attempt to defend a moment of sporting beauty.

The rules ultimately prevailed, and Barcelona left Seville with another comfortable victory. Yet the disallowed goal and Bellerin's spontaneous reaction have become one of the most memorable stories from the match.

Lo Celso's spectacular volley will not appear in the official statistics, but thanks to the referee's body camera, the football world has gained something almost as entertaining: a defender seriously trying to convince an official that a goal should count simply because it was too good to cancel.
