Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has defended the work of the Match Review Committee amid growing concerns over refereeing decisions in the Ghana Premier League.
Asante Twum insists that complaints about officiating are being examined, despite the absence of public information on the outcomes of the committee’s reviews and disciplinary action against referees.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s , he revealed that the committee, chaired by retired FIFA referee Justice Yeboah, had requested match footage from the GFA’s Communications Department to support its investigations.
He stressed that the panel was not relying solely on complaints from clubs, explaining that it had the authority, granted by the GFA Executive Council, to review matches independently.
“Even though clubs have the opportunity to complain for the FA to act when they notice any wrong, the committee or the panel itself, with power granted by the Executive Council, should review matches,” he said.
Asante Twum explained that reviewing incidents could be a lengthy process, with all five committee members sometimes required to meet at the GFA headquarters to analyse footage and reach decisions.
“Even if it requires all five members to meet at the FA and review the matches and make decisions, they do. It sometimes takes a whole day or two to review and take decisions,” he added.
The GFA communications chief acknowledged concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding sanctions against referees but clarified that the absence of public announcements did not mean complaints were being ignored.
“Unfortunately, publication is not done when a referee is punished,” he said.
Asante Twum expressed confidence in the review process, maintaining that the system would allow the relevant authorities to take appropriate action whenever an official is found to have made an error.
“So long as the system is committed, then I believe that the leaders will take decisions when someone is found to have faulted,” he added.
The Match Review Committee plays a key role in examining contentious refereeing decisions, as scrutiny of officiating continues to feature prominently in discussions about the Ghana Premier League.
