Hearts of Oak eye top spot as Basake Holy Stars visit

Hearts of Oak SC will look to strengthen their title credentials and move to the top of the Premier League table when they host  Basake Holy Stars FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The Phobians head into the Matchday fixture buoyed by back-to-back victories for the second time this season, having edged Vision FC 1-0 away from home at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex last weekend.

They have recorded two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five league matches, underlining their consistency as the campaign gathers momentum.

Hearts of Oak currently sit second on the league table with 14 points, level with the league leaders but trailing on goal difference. They have scored eight goals and conceded just twice in seven matches, highlighting their defensive solidity and growing credentials as title contenders.

Their home form will be a major source of confidence heading into Friday’s encounter. The Phobians remain unbeaten at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in the league this season, having registered two wins and a draw from three matches, scoring five goals without conceding. They will be determined to maintain that impressive record and claim another crucial victory in their pursuit of the league summit.

However, Basake Holy Stars could prove a difficult opponent, particularly given their previous meetings with the Phobians. Hearts are yet to beat the Ayinase-based side in their two home encounters, recording one draw and one defeat without scoring in either match. The hosts will be eager to break that run while preserving their defensive strength and improving their attacking output.

Basake Holy Stars travel to the capital in confident mood after climbing to fifth place on the table. The Ayinase lads secured a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over Bechem United FC last weekend, taking their tally to four wins in seven matches - joint-most in the league ahead of the fixture.

With 12 points, five goals scored and seven conceded, Basake Holy Stars have made an encouraging start to their third consecutive season in the top flight. Their recent form, which includes three victories in their last five league matches, suggests they have the confidence and resilience to challenge the league’s leading sides.

Their biggest concern, however, remains their away record. Basake Holy Stars have lost all three of their away league matches this season, scoring just once and conceding seven goals. They will need a significant improvement on the road to overcome a Hearts of Oak side that has been formidable on home soil.

Nevertheless, the visitors can draw encouragement from their head-to-head record against the Phobians since gaining promotion to the Premier League in the 2024/25 season, having recorded one win and one draw in their meetings.
