Real Madrid manager José Mourinho faces mounting squad turmoil after a chaotic match against Villarreal resulted in a red card for Vinicius Junior and a yellow card for the coach. The Spanish club currently sits fourth in La Liga, trailing table-topping Barcelona by six points.

The turbulence surrounding José Mourinho’s second stint at Real Madrid escalated dramatically at the Santiago Bernabéu, where a narrow victory over Villarreal quickly dissolved into disciplinary chaos. Teenager Yan Diomande opened the scoring with his first goal for the club before Vinicius Junior added a second-half finish. Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera Escuderos brandished a red card just 20 minutes after the Brazilian entered the match as a substitute for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Some players need time to get back to their usual level … and I’m not going to hide from that.

The dismissal triggered a pitchside melee involving furious players and an incandescent manager. Mourinho picked up a yellow card for berating officials throughout the match and subsequently skipped the post-match press conference. Vinicius issued a brief social media statement saying he was sorry to the team and the fans ahead of a potential three-match suspension that would sideline him for the upcoming Clásico against Barcelona.

Tactical Mastery Against Barcelona Followed Domestic Struggles

Despite domestic inconsistency and the ongoing Vinicius disciplinary headache, Mourinho’s tactical approach yielded a marquee victory when Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1. Lining up in a 4-4-2 formation without the suspended Vinicius, Mourinho deployed Federico Valverde at right-back and introduced Bernardo Silva to partner Aurélien Tchouaméni in central midfield. Arda Guler and Yan Diomande patrolled the flanks, leaving Jude Bellingham to operate up top alongside Kylian Mbappé.

Employing a hallmark big-game strategy, Mourinho assigned Silva to man-mark Barcelona playmaker Pedri, neutralizing his impact. Mbappé secured the result with a double, elevating his season tally to eight goals in nine matches and his overall club record to 94 goals in 112 appearances.

Defending Kylian Mbappé Amid Travel Criticism

Mourinho also spent recent weeks shielding his star French forward from media scrutiny. Critics questioned Mbappé’s trips to Paris and Switzerland while he recovered from a minor knee injury sustained on international duty. Dismissing the backlash as ridiculous, the Portuguese coach accused outside media of attempting to turn the club’s supporters against their top scorer.

What I can promise is when a Real Madrid player doesn’t behave the way a Real Madrid player is supposed to … They won’t have the chance to whistle, because they’ll be at home.

The defending in Europe has offered steadier footing than domestic play. After opening their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Inter Milan featuring goals from Mbappé and Federico Valverde, Real Madrid prepares to face Roma at the Stadio Olympico. The Italian side is currently third in Serie A after drawing 0-0 at Como on Sunday.

The Roots of Tactical Periodisation and Managing Chaos

Mourinho’s training methods involve an acceptance of match chaos. The philosophy contrasts sharply with the positional play favored by managers like Pep Guardiola and Enzo Maresca, who prize symmetrical shapes and structured control. Mourinho instead embraces the chaotic fluctuations of a match, demanding adaptability from individual talents like Bellingham, Mbappé, and Silva while the club fights to close the gap at the top of the league table.
