Real Madrid fans were pretty happy about the fact that Kylian Mbappe was able to score two goals for them to lead his team to victory against arch-rivals Barcelona on Sunday night.
The first goal was a bit of a lucky one, but the second was a brilliant reward to end a brilliant team move, and was ultimately the deciding goal between the two sides.
However, despite his two-goal heroics, many fans online have claimed that Mbappe was not that great for the team on the night. They argue that yes, he scored the two goals but he was barely involved in the attack at many points, and was not able to provide the team with the spark they needed on the ball. His dribbling was weak, too, as was noted by the fans.
Some of those bits of criticism are correct. Mbappe did not have the perfect game. His dribbling wasn't fantastic in some sequences, that much every fan can agree with.
However, he still had a much better game than most of these fans think. Mbappe scored two goals which ultimately decided the match, but he also dropped deep so many times to help with evading the press.
It was not Benzema-esque, but Mbappe did drop deep numerous times to provide a numerical advantage to this Real Madrid team. In doing so, he was also able to create space for players like Yan Diomande, who drifted inwards and ran into the space and were eventually found by teammates - sometimes even Mbappe.
He should have done better on a few occasions, but in this game, he did a lot more than what he usually does. His synergy with Diomande was working really well. He made some good runs in behind the defense, and was even contributing defensively on many occasions when Real Madrid did not have the ball.
Real Madrid fans know what they expect from Mbappe, and in some aspects he faltered, but in others, he provided more than what he usually does.
These things are not something Mourinho, or any other Real Madrid coach for that matter, ask Mbappe to do because he never has to. Real Madrid are rarely at a numerical disadvantage against some of the normal teams they play.
Yet, games against Barcelona, where the high-line is so suffocating, Real Madrid need more from their attackers, and Mbappe was able to erase some of that pressure and release the ball out to the wings so that the ball keeps moving forward, and he deserves credit for it.
Was this the best game Mbappe has ever played? Not even close, but was it also as bad as people say it was? Absolutely not.
