Black Meteors head coach Desmond Ofei has dismissed suggestions that he does not visit Ghana Premier League centres, insisting that his technical team uses several scouting methods to identify players for the national U-23 side.
Ofei, who recently took charge of the Black Meteors after leaving his role as an assistant coach of the Black Stars, said attending matches in person was not the only way to assess potential national team players.
“Everybody has an opinion in football, and when I attend a match, I don't need to announce myself,” he said after attending Hearts of Oak's 1-0 win over Holy Stars on Friday.
“I'm not the only technical team member or the only person in the technical team. Yaw Preko is there, Mallam Nuhu is there. We have scouts already in the FA who scout for us.”
His comments come after FC Samartex General Manager Edmund Ackah questioned his suitability for the role, raising concerns about his commitment to the domestic league, his knowledge of local players and opportunities for home-based talents.
Ofei explained that the technical team also relies on video scouting and has conducted sufficient assessments to identify players capable of strengthening the squad.
“We do a lot of video scouting as well. We don't necessarily have to be at the venues to see the players we need to see, but we've done enough homework to pick the best players who can help us,” he added.
The Black Meteors are preparing to face Libya in the second round of the Olympic Games qualifiers as Ghana pursue a return to the Olympics for the first time since 2004.
