German-Ghanaian forward Aaron Opoku was on the scoresheet, but his effort proved insufficient as Eintracht Braunschweig suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld in the German 2. Bundesliga on Friday.
The 26-year-old attacker produced a bright individual display at the SchücoArena, pulling a goal back early in the second half after Braunschweig had gone into the break trailing by two goals.
Arminia Bielefeld made a fast start and broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when defender Maximilian Großer rose highest to head home Arne Sicker’s cross.
The hosts doubled their advantage just three minutes later as Joel Grodowski calmly finished from Jannik Rochelt’s assist to put Bielefeld firmly in control before halftime.
Seeking a response, Braunschweig interim coach Lars Kornetka made three changes at the interval, and the visitors were rewarded with an improved performance after the restart.
Opoku reduced the deficit in the 55th minute, collecting a pass from Max Marie before driving a low strike into the bottom-left corner to give Braunschweig renewed hope.
However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived as Grodowski completed his brace in the 68th minute, finishing off an assist from Monju Momuluh to restore Bielefeld’s two-goal cushion.
Opoku, who was one of Braunschweig’s standout performers, was substituted in the 77th minute after an energetic display in attack.
The defeat leaves Eintracht Braunschweig searching for a return to winning ways, while Arminia Bielefeld boosted their campaign by moving to 14 points in the league standings.
Opoku’s goal was another encouraging moment for the versatile forward, who continues to provide an attacking threat for Braunschweig as he looks to enjoy another productive season in German football.
