Ghana’s Black Maidens meet unbeaten Argentina in Under-17 World Cup last 16

The Black Maidens will face Argentina in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Ghana secured their place in the knockout stage only three days earlier, beating Canada 2-0 in their final Group C match.

Joe Nana Adarkwa’s team began the tournament with a 3-0 defeat by Norway before recovering to draw 3-3 with Brazil. They then produced the result they needed against Canada, with substitute Linda Achiaa opening the scoring in the 65th minute before Christiana Ashiaku added a second in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The victory gave Ghana four points and saw them progress as one of the top two teams from Group C.

Argentina will provide a significant test. They topped their group without defeat and enter the knockout stage as favourites, with their style built around technical quality and physical intensity.

Adarkwa is expected to retain much of the side that overcame Canada, with Seidatu Wahab likely to play a central role after being named Player of the Match in that game. Jessica Appiah is also expected to be important in midfield.

Ghana’s substitutes made a decisive impact against Canada. Achiaa scored only 35 seconds after being introduced, while Ashiaku also came off the bench to find the net late on. The strength of the replacements could again prove important against Argentina.

Goalkeeper Belinda Aku Aklie and defenders Rafia Osman, Hajara Adam, Latifa Musah and Seraphina Esse Essenam will need to perform at their best to restrict the Argentine attack.

Priscilla Mensah and Ashiaku provide further attacking options from the bench as Ghana seek to reach the quarter-finals.

“We know we are heading to difficult times. We are going to face tougher opposition, and we are going to work towards that,” Adarkwa said after the win over Canada.

“We came here purposely for a win and it happened. Now we must do it again.”

Victory over Argentina would send the Black Maidens into the quarter-finals of the competition.
