Three Ghanaian players were in action on Monday night as Tottenham Hotspur beat Coventry City 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mohammed Kudus featured on the wings for Tottenham, while Brandon Thomas-Asante and Caleb Yirenkyi represented Coventry City in an encounter that offered Ghanaian football fans an opportunity to assess the trio’s form ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Thomas-Asante lasted 78 minutes in the game, while Yirenkyi was the first of the three to be substituted in the 60th minute, making way shortly after the start of the second half. Kudus was also withdrawn with about three minutes of regulation time remaining.
Despite their early withdrawals, Yirenkyi and Kudus made contributions to their respective sides, likewise Thomas-Asante who also made way for Ephron Mason-Clark on.
Their involvement will provide an additional source of encouragement for Ghana’s technical team as it monitors the performances of players abroad ahead of the upcoming qualifiers against Somalia.
Interim Black Stars coach Kim Lars Björkegren will be keen to assess the trio’s match fitness, consistency and contributions at club level as he prepares his squad for the national team’s next assignment.
With the qualifiers approaching, the performances of Ghanaian players in Europe’s top leagues could prove important in shaping the coach’s selection decisions as the Black Stars seek to strengthen their squad for the continental campaign.
