Ghana will host the World Boxing African Qualifying Tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in August 2027, beating Nigeria, which had previously been announced as the provisional host.
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) secured the hosting rights following a successful bid, with preparations expected to begin immediately.
“Congratulations to the Ghana Boxing Federation for a successful bid. Let’s get ready to start another round of hard work in pursuit of a successful tournament in August 2027. “The work begins now. There’s no time at all. We are only nine months away,” the confirmation message stated.
The tournament will bring together African boxers competing for qualification opportunities for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Hosting the event gives Ghana a chance to showcase its ability to organise a major international boxing competition while raising the sport’s profile locally and across the continent.
The GBF must now coordinate preparations with relevant stakeholders, including arrangements for venues, logistics and participating teams, to meet World Boxing’s requirements.
Nigeria had previously been announced as the provisional host, but the reasons for the change have not been stated.
With the tournament scheduled for August 2027, the focus now shifts to ensuring Ghana delivers a successful event and provides African boxers with a platform to pursue Olympic qualification.
