Mohammed Kudus has strengthened his claim for a central role in Tottenham Hotspur’s plans after delivering two impressive performances in consecutive Premier League victories over Coventry City and Chelsea.
The Ghana international has stepped up in the absence of injured winger Savinho, helping Spurs record a 3-1 win over Coventry before producing another influential display in a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Kudus provided an assist against Coventry, using his dribbling and ability to progress the ball to create attacking opportunities. He followed that performance with an energetic showing against Chelsea, contributing in both attack and defence as Tottenham secured a significant London derby win.
His recent form comes as a timely boost for head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who now faces a decision over how best to accommodate his attacking options when Savinho returns from injury.
Savinho had been one of Tottenham’s most effective attacking players before his injury, impressing with his creativity and ability to beat defenders. However, Kudus’ performances in the Brazilian’s absence have given De Zerbi another compelling reason to keep the Ghanaian in the starting lineup.
Both players are left-footed wingers who are most comfortable operating from the right, where they can cut inside, take on defenders and create chances. Finding a way to maximise their qualities without weakening the team’s balance could therefore present a tactical challenge for the Tottenham manager.
For now, Kudus has made the most of his opportunity. His direct running, technical ability and work rate have helped Spurs find greater attacking rhythm after a difficult start to the campaign.
Tottenham will hope the Ghanaian can maintain his form when they face Crystal Palace this weekend. Another strong performance would further strengthen his position as De Zerbi considers how to manage competition for places in the attacking line.
Kudus has seized his opportunity in Savinho’s absence and made a strong case to remain in Tottenham’s starting lineup. With two influential performances in consecutive wins, the Ghanaian has given De Zerbi little reason to drop him, setting up an intriguing battle for a starting spot when the Brazilian returns.
