Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, deepening a winless run for the visitors. After a scoreless first half dictated largely by Manchester United, Chelsea broke the deadlock through Morgan Rogers in the 50th minute before Cole Palmer sealed the result from the penalty spot following a red card to Lisandro Martínez.
The result leaves Manchester United without a victory in nine matches across all competitions, a winless stretch the club has not endured since 1988. Their last victory came on September 10. Meanwhile, Chelsea climbed provisionally to fourth place in the Premier League table with 16 points, pulling level with Brighton.
Manchester United controlled the tempo during the opening 45 minutes, claiming 51 percent possession and generating the half’s clearest openings. Bruno Fernandes squandered the game’s initial major chance in the 19th minute, lifting a shot over the crossbar after collecting a delivery from Bryan Mbeumo. Amad twice tested Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, who started in place of the absent Emiliano Martínez.
Both sides saw goals overturned for offside during an erratic first period. Chelsea’s Estêvão had an effort ruled out in the 15th minute, while Manchester United experienced the same frustration in the 34th minute when Matheus Cunha headed in a Harry Maguire knockdown from a corner kick only for the assistant referee’s flag to intervene. The teams went into the interval level at 0-0 amid murmurs from the home supporters.
The fixture shifted decisively five minutes after the restart. Following a midfield turnover, Roméo Lavia released Morgan Rogers, who drove between Maguire and Lisandro Martínez, eluded a sliding challenge from Andrey Santos, and lifted a shot over Senne Lammens to open the scoring in the 50th minute.
Manchester United’s discipline deteriorated rapidly thereafter. In the 59th minute, Lisandro Martínez received a yellow card for pulling back Rogers. Just three minutes later, during a set-piece situation, the defender raised his forearm into the face of Wesley Fofana away from the ball. Referee Peter Bankes reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor, awarded a penalty kick to Chelsea, and issued Martínez a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal in the 63e minute.
Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty a minute later, driving a low shot past Lammens despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball. Down to ten men, Manchester United failed to mount a response, though Mbeumo struck the crossbar late in the contest and Lammens produced two saves to deny Estêvão.
Chelsea finished the match with 59 percent possession, outshooting their opponents 20 to 10 and landing 10 shots on target compared to Manchester United’s four. The visitors committed 20 fouls over the course of the afternoon against eight by Chelsea, accumulating five yellow cards and one red card.
The defeat compounds pressure on Michael Carrick, whose side has failed to win since mid-September. When asked by TNT Sports whether he felt betrayed by Lisandro Martínez’s red card, Carrick offered a brief “No.”
Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso praised his side’s reaction after a difficult opening period. Roméo Lavia anchored the midfield in the absence of Jordan Henderson, earning high praise from his manager, who described the Belgian’s display as a very strong performance. Estêvão, making his first Premier League start of the season, consistently troubled the Manchester United backline before receiving an ovation upon his substitution.
For Manchester United, Senne Lammens performed capably under sustained pressure, preventing a heavier defeat with late saves, while Leny Yoro filled in at right back with relative composure. However, defensive lapses and indiscipline undone the tactical organization that had served the visitors during the first half.
Following this result, Chelsea turns its attention toward its next domestic assignment, preparing for an away fixture against Sunderland on Sunday. Manchester United prepares for their next Premier League challenge against Aston Villa, where Lisandro Martínez will serve an automatic suspension.
