Morocco’s final group game against Argentina carries last-16 significance

Morocco face Argentina on Friday in their final Group A match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with qualification for the last 16 in their own hands.

The match will kick off at 20:00 France time and 18:00 Morocco time at the Complexe Mohammed VI de football in Sale.

In France, the game will be available to watch for free on FIFA+ via DAZN. In Morocco, beIN Sports will also show the match, although viewers must have a subscription.

Morocco are second in Group A with three points, level with Argentina but ahead of them on goal difference. Germany lead the section, while New Zealand are also involved in the race to progress.

Youness Rabie’s side began the tournament with an impressive 4-0 victory over New Zealand. That result put the Lioncelles de l’Atlas in a strong position before their second group fixture against Germany.

However, Morocco were beaten 4-2 by Germany in that match after falling four goals behind. Nessma Mouradi gave the Moroccan side hope with two late goals, scoring in the 64th minute and again from a penalty five minutes into added time.

The result means Morocco must avoid defeat against Argentina if they are to secure a place in the knockout phase. A victory would guarantee their progress, while a draw would also be enough for the team to qualify for the last 16.

Argentina are newcomers to the competition, giving Morocco the advantage of greater experience at this level. The Moroccan players will now need to turn that experience into a result in their decisive final group fixture.

Hiba Youssoufi and her team-mates will be seeking to respond after the loss to Germany and finish the group stage with the result required to continue their campaign. Argentina, who have the same number of points but an inferior goal difference, will also be competing for qualification.

The meeting in Sale therefore offers both teams a direct opportunity to secure their place in the next round. Morocco’s position means the outcome is straightforward: they cannot afford to lose, but a point would be enough to keep their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup journey alive.
