Egypt have appointed Ali Maher as the new head coach of their national football team, with the experienced tactician taking charge of the Pharaohs with immediate effect.

Maher’s appointment follows the departure of former head coach Hossam Hassan, bringing an end to his spell in charge of the Egyptian national team.

The new manager faces an immediate challenge as he prepares to lead the Pharaohs in their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Malawi this month.

His appointment comes at a crucial period for Egyptian football, with the national team expected to maintain its strong competitive position on the African continent and secure qualification for the next AFCON tournament.

Maher will be expected to quickly establish his tactical philosophy, assess the available players and build a competitive squad capable of delivering positive results in the upcoming qualifiers.

The former coach now inherits a team with significant expectations, given Egypt’s rich football history and record as the most successful nation in Africa Cup of Nations history.

Attention will now turn to how quickly Maher can settle into his new role and guide the Pharaohs through their upcoming assignments.

His first major test will be the AFCON qualifying encounters against Malawi, where positive results will be important in setting the tone for his tenure.
