Azzedine Ounahi injury threatens Morocco’s November double-header against Niger

Azzedine Ounahi is expected to miss Morocco’s two Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Niger in November after suffering a serious thigh injury while playing in the Greek league.

The 26-year-old was taken off on a stretcher on Sunday before undergoing detailed medical examinations on Monday. An MRI scan showed a third-degree tear to the right biceps femoris, according to Le360 Sport.

Sources close to Panathinaikos have indicated that Ounahi could be unavailable for between two and a half and three months. However, Panathinaikos had not issued an official statement on the injury at the time of writing.

Morocco are due to face Niger in Casablanca on 13 November before meeting them again in Rabat on 17 November. The matches form part of the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

Ounahi, who has won 58 caps and scored 12 goals for Morocco, had established himself as a key member of Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad. His absence would therefore be a significant setback ahead of the next international camp.

He was involved in Morocco’s most recent gathering and provided the assist in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho on 29 September, during the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers.

The injury is the latest in a series of fitness problems for Ounahi, who has suffered 10 injuries since November 2022. Last season, a calf problem ruled him out in October 2025 and again from January to February.

His expected lay-off would leave him facing a race against time to return for Morocco’s later qualifying fixtures, although no official recovery timetable has yet been announced.
