Bursaspor head coach Mustafa Er has eased concerns over Kelechi Iheanacho’s fitness, revealing that the Nigerian striker was withdrawn as a precaution during Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Keçiörengücü, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Iheanacho received medical attention before leaving the pitch, raising concerns among supporters of the Turkish 1. Lig leaders. However, Er insisted that the forward’s problem was minor and that the club had no reason to take unnecessary risks with the game already under control.
“Kelechi has a little problem. We did not want to push too hard,” Er said in quotes by Turkish publication Bursahakimiyet.
“He wanted to continue, but we did not want to risk it. We were already ahead 4-2, and we had the score.”
The 30-year-old had already made his mark on the contest, scoring Bursaspor’s third goal five minutes into the second half to continue his remarkable scoring streak in the league.
Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, Iheanacho created space with a dribble before firing into the net to put his side 3-2 ahead. The goal extended his run to 12 consecutive league matches with a goal, taking his tally for the season to 16 goals and three assists in 12 appearances.
Lewis Baker also found the net for Bursaspor, while Brazilian midfielder Lincoln completed the scoring in the 66th minute after setting up the earlier goals.
Lincoln’s afternoon ended on a sour note when he received two bookings in quick succession and was sent off in the 84th minute, forcing Bursaspor to see out the closing stages with 10 men.
The victory marked Bursaspor’s third consecutive league win and their fourth in five matches, lifting them above Kayserispor to the top of the table with 28 points from 12 games.
Keçiörengücü remain fifth on 20 points after the defeat brought their 10-match unbeaten run to an end.
Bursaspor will host Band?rmaspor on Saturday, with Er hoping Iheanacho recovers in time to extend his scoring streak and help the league leaders maintain their position at the summit.
