José Mourinho has warned Real Madrid against becoming complacent after Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including a dramatic late winner, to secure a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday's El Clásico.

Mbappé struck in the 41st minute before finding the net again in the 87th minute to give Madrid all three points in a fiercely contested encounter.

The victory also marked his 100th goal for the Spanish giants and handed Barcelona their first league defeat of the 2026-27 season.

Despite the result, Mourinho insisted that beating Barcelona was only one step towards Real Madrid's bigger objective of winning LaLiga.

Madrid's fifth consecutive victory across all competitions leaves them third in the league table with 24 points from 10 matches, three points behind leaders Barcelona, who have 27 points.

Atlético Madrid sit second with 25 points.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho made it clear that his players must maintain their focus if they want to challenge for the title.

Mourinho Sends Strong Message After El Clásico Victory

Mourinho was pleased with his team's performance but warned that the victory would mean little if Madrid failed to maintain their standards in subsequent matches.

The Portuguese coach insisted that his players must look beyond the excitement of defeating their biggest rivals and remain focused on the league title.

"This is a great win, but when we get back to work, I'm not going to let anyone have their head in the clouds," Mourinho said.
"If we win today and lose at El Sardinero [ away at Racing Santander next weekend ], Real Madrid don't play to win at Camp Nou, but rather to win the league."
"We have to keep going."

The victory continued Madrid's impressive run of form, but Mourinho is focused on preventing his players from becoming distracted by the significance of the Clásico result.

With the title race still wide open, the coach knows that consistency over the coming weeks will be crucial to Madrid's ambitions.

Mourinho Praises Madrid's Performance Against Barcelona

Mourinho described the encounter as a high-quality contest and praised his players for their organisation, concentration and courage against a strong Barcelona side.

The coach was particularly pleased with how his team responded to the challenges of the match before securing the late winner.

"I think it was a great game," Mourinho said.
"A game at a high level, a game which the world that loves football stopped to see, and they weren't let down..."
"In our case, the boys played an extraordinary game, well organised, focused, with a lot of courage.
"For me it's a great victory for the boys, against a great opponent."
"The boys deserve it."

The victory also extended Madrid's winning run to five matches across all competitions, giving the team further momentum as the season progresses.

However, Mourinho laid emphasis on consistency as he expects his players to build on the result rather than treat it as a defining achievement in isolation.

Lunin Steps Up as Courtois Misses Clásico

Real Madrid were also forced to make a change in goal after first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois was ruled out of the match with flu.

Reserve goalkeeper Andriy Lunin stepped in at Camp Nou, with Mourinho confident in the Ukrainian's ability to handle the pressure of such a high-profile fixture.

The coach revealed that his message to Lunin before the game was simple: be prepared to play when called upon.

"The only thing I said to Lunin before the game was: you train to play, not to be on the bench," Mourinho said.
"We have the best keeper in the world, but today we weren't crying before the game because Thibaut couldn't play."
"The group is strong."

Mourinho believes in the depth of his squad and the importance of having players ready to contribute when regular starters are unavailable.

Valverde Plays Through Injury to Help Madrid

Madrid captain Federico Valverde also showed his commitment to the team after picking up an injury early in the match.

According to Mourinho, the midfielder continued playing for more than 40 minutes despite the problem because he wanted to help his teammates complete the job against Barcelona.

The collective effort eventually helped Madrid secure the three points.

"Valverde played injured for over 40 minutes," he said.
"He got injured, he wanted to carry on. He wanted to go to the limit."
"He gave everything on the field."

Mbappé's Madrid Journey Reaches Another Milestone

Kylian Mbappé scored a brace to mark his 100th Real Madrid goal against FC Barcelona in Sunday's El Clásico.

The 27-year-old joined the Spanish side on a free transfer in June 2024 after establishing himself as one of Europe's most prolific forwards.

He scored 256 goals in 308 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain and 27 goals in 60 appearances for AS Monaco, before starting his career at Madrid.

The forward will be eager to add major trophies to his individual achievements, and was clear that collective success remains his priority as Madrid seek to reclaim the LaLiga title.

The brace against Barcelona came one day before the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, with Mbappé among the leading contenders for the prestigious individual award.

Updated LaLiga Table After Real Madrid's Clásico Win

The result leaves Barcelona top of the 2026-27 LaLiga standings with 27 points from 10 matches.

Atlético Madrid are second with 25 points, while Real Madrid occupy third place with 24 points.

18 Espanyol 10 2 2 6 -2 8
19 Valencia 10 1 3 6 -10 6
20 Málaga 10 0 5 5 -12 5

With only three points separating the top three teams, the title race remains finely balanced.

Madrid's victory has reduced the gap to Barcelona and provided a significant boost to their championship hopes.

However, Mourinho has made it clear that the team cannot afford to relax after one major win.

For the Portuguese coach, the message is simple: defeating Barcelona matters, but winning LaLiga is the ultimate objective.
