Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan emerges as potential GFA presidential candidate

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has emerged as a potential candidate for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency ahead of next year's election, adding further intrigue to what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race for the country's top football office.

Ghana's all-time leading scorer is being linked with a bid for the presidency amid reports that current GFA president Kurt Okraku is unlikely to seek a third term despite recent constitutional changes that would allow him to do so.

At the GFA's 2025 Congress held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, delegates approved amendments to the association's statutes, extending the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three. The decision fuelled expectations that Okraku, who also serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would remain in office beyond his current tenure.

However, speculation over his future has intensified following Ghana's recent struggles on the international stage. The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco—ending a run of more than two decades of consecutive appearances—and have also endured a difficult start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

With uncertainty surrounding the GFA leadership, Gyan has been identified as one of several high-profile figures who could contest the presidency, although the former striker has not publicly confirmed any intention to run.

The ex-Sunderland, Al Ain and Kayserispor forward remains one of the most decorated footballers in Ghanaian history. He is the Black Stars' all-time leading scorer and Africa's highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, achievements that have cemented his legacy as one of the continent's greatest players.

Since retiring from international football, Gyan has remained actively involved in the game. He has served in various roles under the current GFA administration and is currently an ambassador for Ghana's national teams, promoting football development and supporting the Black Stars and other national sides.

Should he decide to enter the race, Gyan would join a growing list of potential candidates linked with the presidency.

Among those mentioned are football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United Chief Executive Officer Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain André Ayew.

Annim Addo, a former GFA Executive Council member and long-time football administrator, also manages Gyan, while Gyambrah brings years of experience in regional football administration. Amande has previously contested for a place on the GFA Executive Council, and Ayew recently revealed he has been encouraged by football stakeholders to consider a future presidential bid.

Reports also suggest that a former GFA vice-president could enter the contest, further increasing competition for the association's highest office.

Although Gyan is yet to make his intentions known, his possible entry would undoubtedly be one of the biggest storylines ahead of the election, given his stature in Ghanaian and African football.

The Ghana Football Association is yet to announce the official election timetable and nomination process, with prospective candidates expected to declare their intentions once the electoral roadmap is released.
