Floyd Mayweather could become oldest ever world champion as potential rival, 28, claims fight is agreed

FLOYD MAYWEATHER could become the oldest world champion in boxing history after Ryan Garcia claimed they have agreed to a sensational showdown.

The American boxing legend, 49, could make a remarkable return to the professional ranks with a world title on the line.

Bernard Hopkins currently holds the record after becoming a unified light-heavyweight champion aged 49 in April 2014 – an age Mayweather has already surpassed.

And the unbeaten superstar could now rewrite the history books if he dethrones Garcia for his WBC welterweight crown.

Garcia, 21 years younger than Mayweather, stunned boxing fans on Wednesday by posting a screenshot of a FaceTime call between the pair.

The reigning world champion then claimed the pair had agreed to meet at 147lbs, with Mayweather’s famous unbeaten record at stake.

Garcia wrote on X: “Trust me at first I thought this was bull***. But it’s real Floyd and I agree to a fight.”

The proposed blockbuster would mark Mayweather’s first professional contest since he retired with a perfect 50-0 record after stopping UFC superstar Conor McGregor in 2017.

Mayweather has fought in eight exhibitions since retiring, taking on the likes of Logan Paul, Deji and Aaron Chalmers, with his most recent outing coming in a 2024 rematch against John Gotti III.

Garcia captured the WBC welterweight title by beating Mario Barrios in February before defending his crown with a devastating second-round knockout of Britain’s Conor Benn in September.

However, major hurdles stand in the way of Mayweather’s historic comeback, including previously arranged fights involving boxing icons Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao was set to face Mayweather last month, but is now heavily rumoured to feature on the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua undercard against Welshman Joe Cordina instead.

According to reports, Mayweather is also embroiled in a legal dispute with promotional company CSI Sports, which is suing him for breach of contract and seeking $4.65million (£3.5m) in returned advances plus damages over agreements involving those bouts.

And despite Garcia’s stunning announcement, no date, venue or signed contract has been confirmed.
