Achraf Hakimi Closes in on Samuel Eto’o’s African Champions League Assist Record

Achraf Hakimi is closing in on Samuel Eto’o’s record for the most assists by an African player in UEFA Champions League history after providing a superb assist in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes.

The Moroccan international set up Fabián Ruiz for PSG’s late goal, taking his Champions League assist tally to 19 and drawing level with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah on the all-time list for African players in the competition.

Hakimi now needs just one more assist to equal Cameroon legend Eto’o, who leads the standings with 20 assists. Two additional assists would see the PSG right-back claim the record outright.

The 27-year-old’s latest contribution underlined his growing influence in European football, with his attacking qualities making him a key figure in Luis Enrique’s tactical system.

Operating from the right flank, Hakimi has established himself as one of the continent’s most effective attacking defenders, combining pace, intelligent movement and precise delivery to create opportunities for his teammates.

His rise up the Champions League assist rankings reflects the evolution of the modern full-back, with Hakimi playing a crucial role in PSG’s attacking transitions and their ability to stretch opposing defences.

The current standings for African players with the most assists in Champions League history are:

Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon) — 20 assists

Achraf Hakimi (Morocco) — 19 assists

Mohamed Salah (Egypt) — 19 assists

Hakimi’s pursuit of Eto’o’s benchmark comes as PSG continue their impressive start to the Champions League campaign. The French champions have collected nine points from their opening three matches, putting them in a strong position in the league phase.

With more European fixtures ahead, the Moroccan defender will have further opportunities to move closer to the historic milestone.

Matching Eto’o’s record would place Hakimi alongside one of African football’s greatest forwards, while surpassing it would establish him as the continent’s leading provider of assists in the competition.

For Hakimi, the achievement would represent another landmark in a career defined by consistency, attacking ambition and success at the highest level of European club football.
