Ghana football legend Malik Jabir has questioned Kurt Okraku’s reported ambition to seek a third term as president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), arguing that his leadership should be judged by success on the pitch.
The GFA amended its constitution at its 2025 Congress to increase the presidential term limit from two to three terms, potentially allowing Okraku to remain in office beyond his current tenure if he contests and wins re-election.
Okraku, who assumed office in 2019, has yet to confirm whether he will seek another term in 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, former Asante Kotoko player and coach Jabir expressed concern about changes to term limits in football administration, insisting that the focus should be on delivering results rather than extending time in office.
“What third term? Look, any association that keeps changing its term of office means maybe we are not too serious,” he said.
Jabir argued that Okraku would have received widespread backing to remain in office if Ghana had won major trophies during his tenure.
“I tell you, if Okraku had won all the cups we need by now, I don’t think anybody would want him to go,” he added.
However, the veteran coach questioned the lack of major silverware during Okraku’s presidency and expressed frustration with the Black Stars’ performances despite changes to the technical team.
“But he hasn’t won even one. Even sometimes it’s difficult to beat a team with seven coaches. What are we waiting for?” Jabir said.
Meanwhile, preparations for the 2027 GFA presidential election are gathering pace, with Samuel Annim Addo, Ralph Gyambrah, Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew having expressed interest in contesting the position.
Former GFA vice-president George Afriyie is yet to make a decision on whether he will join the race.
