Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan Mourns Father Alongside His Brother

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his brother, Baffour Gyan, were visibly saddened as they gathered to pay their final respects to their late father, Mr George Gyan Baffour Mensah, during his funeral ceremony.

The emotional moment was captured in a live video from the event, showing the two brothers united in grief as they joined other mourners to bid farewell to the man who played an important role in their lives.

For Asamoah Gyan, the occasion marked a deeply personal moment away from the football pitch, where he spent years representing Ghana and building a reputation as one of the country’s most recognised strikers. On this occasion, however, public attention was focused on him not as a former national team captain, but as a son mourning the loss of his father.

His brother, Baffour Gyan, also stood alongside him as the family honoured the memory of their late patriarch. The sadness displayed by the two brothers reflected the weight of the occasion as relatives, friends and sympathisers gathered to support them.

George Gyan Baffour Mensah was the father of the two former footballers. His death brought messages of sympathy and support from people within and outside Ghana’s football community.

The family had earlier held a one-week observation in his honour on August 21, 2026, at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools AstroTurf in Accra. The gathering attracted several personalities, including former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi, football legend Abedi Pele and members of the Ayew family.

The one-week ceremony gave friends, colleagues and well-wishers an opportunity to mourn with the Gyan family before the final funeral arrangements.

Saturday’s funeral has provided another occasion for those close to the family to pay their respects. The sight of Asamoah and Baffour standing together in grief has also drawn attention from followers who know the brothers through their contributions to Ghanaian football.

As the ceremony continues, the family is receiving support from mourners as they lay George Gyan Baffour Mensah to rest and celebrate his life.
