Chelsea midfielder Kendry Paez is reportedly considering leaving Stamford Bridge when the January transfer window opens after failing to secure a regular role under head coach Xabi Alonso.
According to The Athletic on Thursday, October 22, 2026, transfer journalist Nicolo Schira has indicated that the Ecuadorian youngster is ready to move on from Chelsea. However, it remains uncertain whether he would prefer another loan spell to gain experience or seek a permanent transfer away from the club.
Paez joined Chelsea last summer after celebrating his 18th birthday, having agreed to the move from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle two years earlier. His arrival generated considerable excitement, with expectations that he would eventually develop into an important member of the first team.
Despite his potential, the midfielder has struggled to make the anticipated progress. Loan spells with Strasbourg and River Plate have not secured him a consistent place in Chelsea's senior plans, and he has instead been featuring for the club's Under-21 side during the 2026/27 campaign.
His uncertain future is notable because several senior Chelsea players reportedly believe he possesses the ability to become a valuable asset. Captain Reece James and attacking player Cole Palmer are among those said to have supported his development and encouraged his eventual integration into the first team.
Journalist Ben Jacobs previously highlighted the interest shown by experienced members of the squad in helping Paez settle into the club's long-term plans. He reported in January that Palmer had spoken with the youngster while he was at Strasbourg, discussing the possibility of eventually establishing himself at Chelsea. James had also reportedly held a conversation with the midfielder.
Jacobs explained that a number of senior players had invested time and attention in Paez because they believed he could become an important figure for the club in the future.
Nevertheless, the encouragement has yet to translate into consistent performances or a breakthrough into Alonso's senior squad. According to the report, Paez has managed just one assist in four appearances for Chelsea's Under-21 team this season, raising further questions about his current development.
Previous reports have also questioned aspects of his professionalism, although his struggles should not automatically be attributed to a single factor. Adjusting to English football, adapting to different playing environments and coping with the expectations surrounding his transfer could all influence his progress.
Paez was widely regarded as one of Ecuador's brightest emerging talents before moving to Europe. He made headlines by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Ecuador's top division, strengthening expectations that he could develop into a major international prospect.
Chelsea must now consider whether another loan would provide the regular playing time he needs or whether a permanent departure would better suit the club and the player. With January approaching, his next move could prove important in determining whether he fulfils the promise that made him such a highly regarded young talent.
