Former Barcelona Youth Coach Reveals What Made Yamal Special: ''No coach taught him how to play

According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 16, 2026, former Barcelona youth coach Ivan Carrasco has revealed that Lamine Yamal displayed exceptional footballing talent long before establishing himself in the club’s first team.

Carrasco believes the winger’s natural ability, technical skills and understanding of the game set him apart from other youngsters at Barcelona’s academy. He explained that some of Yamal’s qualities went beyond what could be taught through conventional coaching.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Carrasco reflected on his experience working with Barcelona’s 2006 and 2007 youth generations, which included Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Marc Bernal, Hector Fort, Xavi Espart and Marc Guiu.

The former coach described Yamal as an outstanding prospect whose performances in training and competitive matches consistently demonstrated his potential. He highlighted the teenager’s dribbling, finishing and technical ability as key strengths.

However, Carrasco explained that Yamal’s greatest quality was not limited to his ability to control the ball and beat defenders. His tactical awareness, quick decision-making and ability to assess different situations also distinguished him from other promising players.

Carrasco believes Barcelona must give the young winger the freedom and support needed to develop his abilities without imposing unnecessary restrictions on his playing style.

The former coach also praised Cubarsi for demonstrating maturity, leadership and strong communication skills at a young age.

Bernal also impressed Carrasco, who revealed that the midfielder initially played in a more advanced central role before gradually adapting to defensive midfield. However, with Xavi Espart already occupying that position regularly, Barcelona’s coaching staff experimented with using Bernal at right-back to give both youngsters opportunities to develop.

Carrasco’s reflections highlight the importance of recognising natural talent, tactical intelligence and adaptability when developing young footballers, particularly as Barcelona continues to nurture its promising academy graduates.
