According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Lisandro Martinez has issued a public statement after criticising Manchester United’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, insisting that his comments were driven by his desire to see the club compete for major trophies.
The Argentine defender addressed the controversy surrounding his post-match interview amid growing uncertainty about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Martinez reportedly expressed frustration over Manchester United’s lack of investment during the summer transfer window after Tuesday’s defeat. His comments have raised questions about his relationship with the club’s hierarchy, while his contract situation remains unresolved.
According to the report, football director Jason Wilcox is expected to remain in his position. Martinez’s current contract is due to expire next summer, although Manchester United have the option to extend it by another 12 months.
The defender later took to Instagram to explain his remarks, admitting that frustration had influenced his reaction but maintaining that his comments reflected his ambitions for the club.
"After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted," Martinez wrote.
He added that his words came from his determination to help Manchester United return to the highest level of European football.
"My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours. Those high standards are part of how I see football and the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt," he stated.
Martinez also acknowledged that the players must take responsibility for the team's disappointing performances.
"I know that, first and foremost, it's us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility," he said.
The Argentine also expressed confidence in his teammates and head coach Michael Carrick, insisting that the club must work together to improve.
"I believe in my teammates, our manager and everyone working to help this club move forward. I'm convinced that the way forward is to keep working together, with ambition and commitment," Martinez added.
Manchester United have now gone five matches without a win in all competitions, increasing the pressure on Carrick ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Red Devils are also seeking their first league victory since August, making the upcoming fixture an important test for the manager and his players.
