Former Arsenal Striker Retires From Football Aged 33

Former Arsenal academy forward Chuks Aneke has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33, bringing an end to a career that saw him represent several clubs in England and Europe.

According to a report by Football London on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Aneke confirmed the decision in a message shared on Instagram on Wednesday. He accompanied the announcement with a video compilation highlighting important moments from his time in the game, while expressing appreciation to those who supported him throughout his career.

In his statement, the former striker formally declared that he was stepping away from professional football. He acknowledged the contributions of coaches, club staff, teachers, friends, relatives and supporters, recognising the roles they played in his development and journey.

Aneke also reflected positively on his experiences, noting that both encouragement from supporters and criticism from others had formed part of his footballing story. Although he is leaving the playing side of the sport, he indicated that he could pursue new opportunities in the future.

His football journey began at Arsenal, where he joined the club’s academy in 2001 at just seven years old. After progressing through the youth system, he signed his first professional contract in July 2010. However, breaking into the senior team proved difficult, and he made only one first-team appearance for the north London club.

That opportunity came in 2011 when he entered the field as a late substitute during an English League Cup fixture against Shrewsbury Town. Despite his limited senior involvement, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had previously praised Aneke’s physical presence and technical ability, drawing comparisons between his qualities and those of former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.

Arsenal released him in June 2014, bringing his 13-year association with the club to a close. He subsequently sought regular playing opportunities elsewhere, spending time on loan at Stevenage, Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra.

Crewe proved to be one of the most productive stops in his career. Aneke scored 24 goals in 82 appearances for the club and was part of the team that defeated Southend United in the 2013 Football League Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.

After two seasons with Belgian side Zulte Waregem, he returned to English football in August 2016 to join MK Dons. His contribution included an impressive 19-goal campaign that helped the club secure promotion from League Two.

Aneke later played for Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City before returning to Charlton in January 2022. He remained there until 2025, leaving after his contract expired following the club’s promotion.

In September 2025, he joined Shrewsbury Town, making 15 appearances across competitions without starting a match. His time with the club ended in January after both parties agreed to his departure by mutual consent.

Reports indicate that Aneke is considering opportunities in scouting and television analysis. Such roles could allow him to remain involved in football while beginning a new chapter away from professional playing.
