Man Utd has reportedly stun Chelsea with talks over €174m double signing

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United have made initial enquiries about Barcelona midfielder Fermin López and Atlético Madrid's Pablo Barrios as they consider potential options to strengthen their squad. Chelsea have also been linked with both players.

United are reportedly assessing ways to address several weaknesses following a difficult start to the season. Manager Michael Carrick is under pressure ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Chelsea, with both clubs expected to be active in the transfer market in 2027.

Chelsea have previously shown interest in López, submitting an offer for the midfielder in 2025 that was rejected by Barcelona. The Spaniard has since signed a long-term contract with the Catalan club, but transfer speculation has returned, with reports suggesting that the Blues could consider making a significant bid.

Barrios has also attracted interest from Premier League clubs, although securing his signature could prove difficult. The midfielder remains an important member of Atlético Madrid's squad despite recurring muscle injuries that have occasionally affected his availability.

Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto revealed that Manchester United made enquiries about both players during their recent Champions League trip to Madrid.

However, he clarified that the contact was only exploratory and did not represent the beginning of formal negotiations. He also indicated that neither midfielder is expected to leave their current club.

United's interest comes after the club signed three midfielders during last summer's transfer window.

López is a more attack-minded midfielder than Barrios and could potentially fill a role similar to that of Bruno Fernandes, whose current contract expires at the end of the season. However, United have the option to extend the Portuguese midfielder's deal by another year.

Signing either target is expected to be difficult because of their high valuations. López has an estimated transfer value of €116.5 million, while Barrios is valued at €57 million.

With Manchester United also needing to strengthen other areas of their squad, the club could be reluctant to commit significant funds to another expensive midfield signing.
