According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday, October 19, 2026, Manchester City could face a significant points deduction that may leave them facing relegation to the Championship following guilty verdicts on most of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League.
According to the Daily Mail, chief sports writer Oliver Holt believes a substantial points deduction and a heavy fine are the most likely punishments for the club.
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of the vast majority of the charges relating to alleged financial misconduct. However, the scale and timing of the sanctions remain uncertain as the club continues with its appeal process.
Holt reported that the Premier League wants the punishment to be announced before the appeal is concluded. The appeal is not expected to be resolved before the end of January.
City could also face an additional points deduction next season, a punishment that could potentially keep them in the Championship for at least another campaign.
Meanwhile, expulsion from the Premier League and relegation to League Two are considered unlikely options because such decisions would create significant complications for both the Premier League and the English Football League.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the case, City have made an impressive start to the season, winning their opening seven matches under manager Enzo Maresca. However, any major sanctions could significantly affect their position in the title race.
Arsenal, meanwhile, strengthened their challenge with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, leaving the Gunners three points behind City at the top of the Premier League table.
Holt suggested that criticism of Arsenal's performance against Forest should not necessarily be viewed negatively, arguing that top teams sometimes need to produce practical performances to secure important victories.
The ongoing financial case continues to cast uncertainty over City's campaign. Although no final punishment has been confirmed, a substantial points deduction could have serious consequences for the club.
A penalty severe enough to trigger relegation would dramatically reshape the Premier League title race and potentially strengthen Arsenal's position. Further developments are expected as the disciplinary proceedings and appeal process continue.
