Andrey Santos highlights five players he thinks can help change Man Utd’s fortunes

Manchester United are facing growing pressure to improve their performances under Michael Carrick after recording just two victories in their first 11 matches across all competitions. Their disappointing run continued on Wednesday night with a heavy 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, further increasing concerns about the team’s direction.

The latest setback has placed Carrick under greater scrutiny as he attempts to restore confidence and consistency within his squad. United must now turn their attention to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, where a more convincing performance will be needed to demonstrate that the team can respond positively to its recent struggles.

Despite the poor results, midfielder Santos remains confident that United possess enough quality to turn their season around. He identified several players, including Carlos, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri, as important figures who could help the club regain its competitive edge.

Speaking on Premier League Productions’ Preview Show, Santos stressed that improving the situation requires a collective effort involving the players, coaching staff and supporters. He believes unity and a shared determination to succeed are essential if United are to move beyond their current difficulties.

“The only way to change the situation here, our staff, our players, our supporters, is together,” Santos said.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining belief and working consistently, pointing to the talent available within the squad as a reason for optimism. According to the midfielder, the club must approach each day with the commitment required to improve performances and secure better results.

Santos’ comments come amid growing questions about why United have struggled to translate their individual quality into consistent team displays. Fernandes remains an important source of creativity and leadership, while Mainoo’s injury has reduced the options available in midfield and forced Carrick to consider alternative combinations.

Mount is also seeking to establish himself more consistently after experiencing injury problems since arriving from Chelsea. His ability to contribute regularly could provide another boost as United attempt to strengthen their performances across the pitch.

Meanwhile, Santos has been working towards securing a more regular role after initially finding opportunities limited. Mainoo’s absence has created additional space in midfield, giving the Brazilian a chance to demonstrate his capabilities. He featured in the defeat against Como, although the result highlighted the broader challenges facing the team.

For United, the immediate priority is to address the weaknesses exposed by their recent performances and develop a more reliable approach. Individual talent alone has not been enough to prevent disappointing results, placing greater importance on tactical discipline, teamwork and consistency.

Santos believes the club’s recovery will depend on everyone taking responsibility rather than expecting a handful of players to solve the problems independently. His message centres on unity, hard work and confidence in the squad’s abilities.

As United prepare for Bournemouth, the team will have an opportunity to respond to the Como defeat and begin rebuilding momentum. However, delivering a stronger performance will be crucial if Carrick and his players are to ease the growing pressure surrounding the club.
