Jean-Philippe Mateta to Miss Three Games After Palace Lose Red Card Appeal

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has been handed a three-match suspension after the Football Association rejected the club’s appeal against his dismissal during Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the FA’s decision means the France international must serve the ban despite Palace’s efforts to have the red card overturned. The striker was sent off in the 13th minute following a challenge involving Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.

Referee Michael Oliver initially punished Mateta with a yellow card, but the decision was subsequently reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee system. After being advised to examine the incident on the pitchside monitor, Oliver reconsidered his original assessment and showed the 29-year-old a straight red card.

Palace challenged the dismissal, maintaining that the contact during the incident was accidental and that the punishment should not stand. However, their appeal was unsuccessful, with the FA confirming its rejection on Wednesday, November 4. Consequently, Mateta will have to complete the full three-game suspension.

The ban will rule him out of several important domestic fixtures. He is set to miss Palace’s Premier League visit to Liverpool on Sunday, followed by the away meeting with Coventry City on November 21. His suspension will conclude with the home encounter against Hull City on November 29.

Mateta’s absence represents a significant concern for manager Oliver Glasner, who will be without one of his leading attacking options during a demanding period of the domestic campaign. The striker has played an important role in Palace’s forward line, making his unavailability a challenge as the coaching staff considers how best to reorganise the attack.

The incident against Tottenham had already created difficulties for Palace during the match itself. Mateta’s early dismissal left the south London side with ten players for most of the contest, placing additional demands on his teammates as they attempted to cope with the numerical disadvantage.

The club’s appeal was intended to overturn the referee’s final decision and make the striker available for the upcoming domestic fixtures. Its rejection means Palace must now prepare for the consequences of losing him across three consecutive matches.

There is, however, a distinction between the competitions covered by the suspension. Reports indicate that Mateta remains eligible to feature in Palace’s European matches while serving the domestic ban. This would allow Glasner to consider using the forward in continental fixtures, even though he cannot select him for the affected domestic games.

The situation gives Palace some flexibility in managing the striker’s workload, but it does not reduce the immediate impact on their Premier League and domestic cup plans.

Mateta’s dismissal, the club’s unsuccessful appeal and the resulting suspension have therefore compounded the problems arising from the defeat to Tottenham. Palace must now identify an alternative attacking arrangement while the France international completes his three-match ban.
