Barcelona star insists Real Madrid were not the better team in El Clasico despite defeat

Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon has rejected the suggestion that Real Madrid demonstrated their superiority during the latest El Clasico, despite Jose Mourinho’s team earning a 2-1 victory at the Spotify Camp Nou. The English forward believes Hansi Flick’s side had enough quality and opportunities to take all three points and remains confident they can compete with Europe’s leading clubs.

According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Gordon discussed Barcelona’s recent defeats and insisted neither Real Madrid nor Paris Saint-Germain should be considered better than the Catalan outfit. His comments came after Madrid secured an important away win, with Mourinho’s tactical plan helping them overcome a Barcelona side that had enjoyed an encouraging start to the campaign.

Gordon accepted that Barcelona had to take responsibility for losing the match, but rejected the idea that the result reflected a difference in overall quality between the teams. Speaking in comments reported by Mundo Deportivo, he also dismissed comparisons suggesting PSG and Madrid were stronger than Flick’s side.

“Are PSG and Real Madrid better than Barcelona? I don't think so. We take responsibility for the two defeats, but I don't think they're better than us,” Gordon said.

The winger maintained that Barcelona remain capable of challenging the strongest teams in Europe. He argued that two disappointing results should not undermine confidence in the squad or change the assessment of its ability. Gordon also felt Barcelona had enough possession and attacking opportunities to win against Madrid.

He separately addressed the defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, suggesting the French champions benefited from having the weekend off before facing Barcelona. In his view, the additional recovery time gave PSG an advantage over a Barcelona side that had less time to prepare.

The El Clasico statistics showed Barcelona controlled 62 per cent of possession and attempted 18 shots, while Madrid recorded 10 efforts. Those figures reflected Barcelona’s greater share of the ball, but did not necessarily mean they created the clearer scoring opportunities.

Madrid registered an expected-goals figure of approximately 1.94, compared with Barcelona’s 1.19, and produced four big chances. The numbers indicated that Mourinho’s players were more effective when they reached dangerous positions, despite spending less time with possession.

Mourinho’s strategy involved allowing Barcelona to control the ball while maintaining a compact defensive shape. Madrid focused on restricting space, protecting their defensive structure and moving quickly into attack whenever opportunities emerged. That approach limited Barcelona’s effectiveness and helped the visitors make better use of their chances.

The victory added to Madrid’s positive run under Mourinho, whose recent tactical adjustments have coincided with improved performances and results. For Barcelona, Gordon’s confidence reflects the belief that the defeat does not settle the wider debate about which side has the stronger squad.

Madrid, however, have already taken the points from the meeting. Their 2-1 success at Camp Nou represents a valuable result in the title race, regardless of Gordon’s view that Barcelona were capable of producing a different outcome. The result will shape both teams’ preparations.
