Veteran broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi has declared his support for former Black Stars captain André “Dede” Ayew to become the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), should the footballer decide to contest the position.
Sefa Kayi said Ghanaian football needs a change in leadership, arguing that fresh ideas could help address the challenges facing the sport. He also expressed hope that Ayew would announce his intentions early if he plans to enter the race.
The broadcaster made the remarks during a light-hearted discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, where he was speaking with sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah.
During the exchange, Sefa Kayi openly stated that he would support Ayew and urged others who want to see changes in Ghana football to rally behind the former national team captain.
“If he has not declared, then I am declaring for him. Kwaku, if Dede decides to contest, I will support him, and I wish everybody would do the same so that there will be changes,” he said amid laughter.
He added that he had a personal interest in the matter, making it clear that his support for Ayew was deliberate rather than an attempt to appear neutral.
Ayew’s name has featured in media speculation about a possible future bid for the GFA presidency. However, he has not confirmed that he intends to contest the position, and no formal declaration has been reported in the information provided.
The speculation has continued as Ayew maintains his connection with Ghanaian football, including his support for the national teams and attendance at Ghana Premier League matches.
His involvement in the sport has prompted discussions about whether he could eventually move from playing football to an administrative role.
Sefa Kayi’s comments add a prominent public voice to that conversation, with the broadcaster openly backing Ayew even before the player has announced any intention to run.
For now, Ayew’s possible candidacy remains unconfirmed. Whether he will pursue the GFA presidency, and what plans he might present for the development of Ghanaian football, remains to be seen.
Sefa Kayi, meanwhile, has made his position clear: if Ayew decides to contest, he intends to support him and hopes others will join him in seeking change in the administration of the game.
